March 13 (Updated 3/18) : Oudtshoom -Ostrich Capital of the World + Cango Caves

After a nice American breakfast (juice, fruit, eggs, bacon, toast, and tea, we travel along the coast for awhile before heading inland towards the city of Oudtshoorn. Since this trip was less than 200 km (120 miles), we convince Shadi to give us an extended rest stop at Wilderness Beach. As you can see from the photos, the beach is a large strand of white sand and rolling surf. I soaked in some additional rays and am as brown as a berry.

The drive to Oudtshoorn is enjoyable since the roads are paved and the route takes us through the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. There are numerous farms along the way and it is the 1st time I have seen hops grown. Biltong has been a mainstay during my African travels. It is a dried meat of beef, kudu and/or ostrich and is quite chewable and tasty; I like mine with a little chili flavoring. Pictured are Sandy and her Mom, Margata from near Hamburg, Germany. They began the trip with me in Johannesburg and were a pleasure to travel with. One of my trip objectives was to Americanize Margata with our humor; by trip's end she had a couple of quick comebacks.

Our accommodations are at Kleinplass Cottages which are quite nice and comfortable. My room can sleep 4 and has a kitchen, TV and sitting area.

My Accommodations
After we are settled we travel to the Kango Caves located not to far from our accommodations.  The caves are nice but not as beautiful as Virginia's Luray Caverns or as big as New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. What the Cango Caves has going for it is an adventure portion which requires one to crawl through tight spaces and experience the true nature of spelunking....we opted to by-pass this thrill...I'm learning!!! Thew "Guide singer" escorted us through the caves and sung a number of songs, including South Africa's National Anthem...lovely voice.

As we head back to the cottages, the road is bordered by numerous ostrich farms, very similar to our cattle/sheep ranches, but full of skittish long-necked birds. Back to our rooms and a little time at pool side. Sandy, Margata and I walk across the street where the lodge has a bar. Margata buys a beautiful ostrich egg with an African motif...lovely. As we are walking back for dinner we see this incredible sunset. We get back and Slyvia announces that dinner is ready. This will be last meal that Slyvia and Solowie cooks. Solowie surprises us with one of her soup dishes which are exceptional. This is our next to last night together...we chat for a bit and go to bed.
